Christine Jardine to press UK Government on sustainable aviation fuel
Edinburgh West MP Christine Jardine is calling on the UK Government to support sustainable aviation fuel production in Scotland.
The UK Government will introduce new regulations to boost production of greener fuels, requiring UK-based companies to produce specified amounts of sustainable fuel. The changes will also create a new system of certificates to help companies prove they are meeting environmental targets.
Ms Jardine hopes an increase in sustainable fuel use will support sustainability efforts at Edinburgh Airport in her constituency.
She also believes the change could provide opportunities for new job and technology development at key Scottish sites, including Grangemouth oil refinery.
Last year, thousands of jobs at the site were placed under threat as owner Ineos looked to reduce its refining operations. The MP hopes this new focus on green fuels could provide a boost for the area.
Christine Jardine said:
“I am very pleased to see the new UK Government recognise the potential for sustainable aviation fuel with this change.
“By encouraging more firms to produce greener fuels, we can continue to support key sites like Edinburgh Airport whilst also helping the aviation industry move towards net zero.
“I hope the UK Government will look at how this change could encourage production of sustainable fuels at Grangemouth, Scotland’s only oil refinery, to save jobs and support key industries.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for communities across Scotland and the UK if we get it right. I hope the Government will work with me to support the future of aviation, and work towards our net zero goals.”
