Cole-Hamilton backs plea from Edinburgh Zoo about fireworks this Hogmanay
Edinburgh Western MSP Alex Cole-Hamilton has today backed calls from Edinburgh Zoo, who have asked residents near the premises to refrain from setting off fireworks over the festive period, following the death of a baby red panda last month.
Three-month old Roxie died after choking on her vomit as fireworks were set off across the city during the civil unrest and anti-social behaviour Edinburgh experienced recently.
Alex Cole-Hamilton said: “The passing of the red panda at Edinburgh Zoo was extremely sad news, these are rare and beautiful creatures. I echo Edinburgh Zoo’s concerns and support them in call to minimize the stress caused by fireworks to these animals as much as possible.
“It has become increasingly clear that action must be taken to prevent fireworks being misused. The current set of rules on licensing, sales and usage don’t seem to have had the desired effect.
“It’s time to look at whether a ban on noisy and disruptive fireworks is necessary to protect animals who suffer as a result.”
