Do Secondary Short Term lets need planning permission?

12 Mar 2024

There is still some confusion about short term lets (STLs).

To operate legally, all landlords of short term lets must have either a licence or an exemption.  The Court’s decision in the recent judicial review of the Council’s STL planning guidance means secondary STL landlords, who operated before 5 September 2022, should contact the Council’s Planning Department before applying for a licence.  They need to find out whether or not planning permission is required.  Hal Osler says  “I would encourage all secondary STL hosts to contact: planning@edinburgh.gov.uk before applying for a licence.”

Complaints about unlicensed STLs can be reported to the Council via PRSEnforcement@edinburgh.gov.uk
