Jardine backs commitment to local food producers
Local food producers will have their products promoted in a new “Buy British” tab on online supermarkets, thanks to a campaign backed by Edinburgh West MP Christine Jardine.
The open letter, signed by over 100 MPs, called on the Government to support a new tab on supermarket websites to encourage consumers to buy local produce and support small businesses and farmers.
Christine is now calling on supermarkets to make the change to their online stores as soon as possible as a "sign of confidence" in local produce.
Christine said, “I am delighted to see that the UK Government has joined me in backing a Buy British section for online retailers and supermarkets.
“It is a sign of confidence in our wonderful local producers and suppliers that high-quality local produce will get the prominent space on online stores it deserves.
“Over the summer, I met a number of local food producers and community groups that are helping people buy fresh, high quality ingredients at a fair, affordable price.
“That is why I joined over 100 MPs from all parties to show our support for farmers and food producers across Scotland and the UK.
“I hope this move will see more people buying local and help our local economy go from strength to strength, and I hope our supermarkets will make this change as soon as possible.”
