Jardine backs local rail travellers against fare hikes
Local Lib Dem MP Christine Jardine has urged the Scottish and UK Governments to do more for rail travellers in Edinburgh West.
The SNP/Green Government’s announcement of a 4.8% increase in fares is the most recent blow to passengers already struggling with the cost of living.
Christine has also urged the UK Government to reconsider planned ticket office closures, which could make journeys less convenient for all on long-distance trains.
Christine said, “The poor performance of our railways is simply unacceptable. Removing ticket offices from stations that serve Edinburgh West will make it impossible for some passengers to get the support they need at stations, and will no doubt put some off travelling by train all together.
“Coupled with a bleak rail fare hike from the SNP/Green Government, commuters in Edinburgh West have been dealt another blow.
“Both Governments must now cut fares, offer more flexible tickets, and work with councils to expand our railway network to encourage more people to use it.”
