Jardine Calls for Energy Bills to be Frozen and Winter Fuel Payments to be Reinstated
Edinburgh West MP Christine Jardine has called on the Government to freeze energy bills following Ofgem’s announcement that the energy price cap will go up again in January.
In light of this news, Ms. Jardine also urged the Government to reinstate Winter Fuel Payments, so pensioners are not hit simultaneously by bill rises and cuts to support.
Ofgem announced that the energy price cap will rise to £1,738 per year in January, following the previous 10% rise in October. Ms. Jardine stresses the importance of cancelling this rise so that households don’t face even higher energy costs in the new year.
Christine Jardine said:
“It is shocking that my constituents in Edinburgh West are once again being forced to pay more money every year just to heat their homes.
“My constituents already face colder weather and higher electricity standing charges – now the Government has taken away pensioners’ Winter Fuel Payments and will allow energy prices to rise for everyone.
“The new Government pledged to bring down energy bills. They must now deliver on their promises and reverse course on these damaging policies.”
