Jardine calls for more support for disabled people in cost-of-living crisis
Edinburgh West MP Christine Jardine has called on Parliament to raise awareness of the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on disabled people.
The Liberal Democrat has put forward an Early Day Motion, calling on the Government to provide extra financial support to disabled people, following reports that almost half of disabled adults have cut back on heating use this winter.
A survey conducted by the Resolution Foundation showed that people with disabilities have 44% less money available to spend than a person without a disability.
Ms Jardine said
“This new survey is a stark reminder that disabled people are bearing the brunt of the cost-of-living crisis.
“With energy bills soaring, many will be making difficult choices between heating their homes, buying food or keeping medical equipment switched on.
“Last year, the Chancellor promised to support the most vulnerable, but the current schemes are not going far enough.
“That is why I am calling for urgent action from the Government to provide the support disabled people need to get through this crisis."
