Jardine Celebrates Birth of Pygmy Hippo at Edinburgh Zoo

8 Nov 2024

Edinburgh West MP Christine Jardine has welcomed news that Edinburgh now has a rival for internet sensation pygmy hippo, Moo Deng. Scotland’s very own pygmy hippo calf named Haggis was born at the Edinburgh Zoo on the 30th of October.

Ms. Jardine lodged an Early Day Motion celebrating Haggis’ birth and sending best wishes to the entire Edinburgh Zoo community.

Pygmy hippos are currently classified as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species, due to the challenges they face in their natural habitat.

Ms. Jardine hopes that Haggis will bring more visitors to the Edinburgh Zoo and applauds the work that the zoo does to promote biodiversity and conservation of species.

Christine Jardine said:

“I was overjoyed to hear the news of Haggis’ birth and cannot wait to go and meet her.

“I understand she has even developed something of an internet rivalry with Moo Deng, the viral pygmy hippo in Thailand.

“The whole team at Edinburgh Zoo do fantastic work, and I would encourage everyone to go along to see Haggis and the rest of the incredible animals.
