Jardine celebrates Morrisons 'Buy British' online shopping section
Edinburgh West MP Christine Jardine has welcomed the success of the “Buy British Online campaign” in persuading supermarket giant Morrisons to create a special online section.
Christine recently sent a letter urging supermarkets to support British farmers by making it easier for customers to identify and purchase products made here in the UK as part of a nationwide campaign.
She is now calling on other supermarkets to create similar online shopping features as soon as possible.
Christine said, “This is a fantastic step forward in making it easier not only for people to find home produced foods but for farmers and others to get their products to consumers.
“Supporting our farmers not only helps them and the economy but is key to reducing the carbon footprint of the food that we eat.
“At a time when food supply chains are threatened by international crises like Brexit and the War in Ukraine, British producers are key to ensuring there is plenty of food on the shelves in Edinburgh West.
“Local food enterprises have a huge potential to supply high-quality, affordable food to my constituents, and I hope this is the beginning of a step change towards increased local consumption.
“I applaud the initiative of Morrisons and hope that other major supermarkets soon follow their lead.”
