Jardine congratulates Edinburgh parks on Green Flag Awards
Edinburgh West MP Christine Jardine has welcomed the news that 38 parks and green spaces in the City have been awarded prestigious Green Flag status.
35 of these are maintained by City of Edinburgh Council, with the remainder looked after by community groups and volunteers.
This includes the Corstorphine Hill Community Walled Garden in Christine’s constituency, which is kept by a dedicated group of community volunteers.
Edinburgh’s awards make up over a third of the total awards in Scotland, and the city ranks third in the UK for the number of Green Flag awards.
To celebrate the news, Christine has tabled a motion in Parliament, highlighting the importance of parks and green spaces for wellbeing and biodiversity.
She said:
“I am delighted to see the hard work of our community has been recognised so strongly by the Green Flag Awards.
“It is no surprise to me that Edinburgh has such as high number of spaces that worthy of these awards, and my warmest congratulations go to everyone who works in our parks all year round.
“Over the last few years, having easy access to parks in our community has become even more important, and we’re lucky to have so many award-winning spaces on our doorstep.
“Volunteer groups like Friends of Corstorphine Hill do a fantastic job maintaining high-quality green spaces for their neighbours and visitors.
“In the face of a climate emergency and threats to biodiversity, it is vital that we keep spaces in our towns and cities open for people and wildlife.
“I hope many people across Edinburgh will join me in spending some quality time in our beautiful parks this summer.”
