Jardine Shocked by New Edinburgh Housing Inflation Figures

25 Nov 2024

Edinburgh West MP Christine Jardine has said she is shocked at newly released housing inflation figures, showing that prices in Edinburgh have risen nearly three times faster than in the rest of the UK.

These Government figures show that the average house price in Edinburgh has gone up by 7.7% between September 2023 and September 2024, while the whole UK saw a more modest increase of 2.8% over the same period.

Private rental price annual inflation has remained high across the Lothian region, increasing by 13.9% on average between September 2023 and September 2024. This is compared to the UK-wide increase over the same period of 8.4%.

Christine Jardine said:

“At a time when we’re already facing a housing crisis, this just adds to the problems people are facing.

“Prices in Edinburgh are already high and the fact that they are climbing nearly three times faster than in the rest of the UK is shocking.

“We need both the UK and Scottish Governments to take urgent action and bring these price rises under control.”
