Today, the Edinburgh Liberal Democrat Group has unveiled a Budget proposal that puts an additional £2.6m into improving road safety, with £1.6m dedicated to areas around schools in the coming financial year.

Acknowledging a recent letter from 53 different parent councils across the city, Group Leader Councillor Kevin Lang said “We need to face reality – the Council are not doing enough on road safety. This must change, and it’s our responsibility to act to make our streets safer. Parent Councils across Edinburgh are right to come together and raise concerns.”

Cllr Sanne Dijkstra-Downie recently challenged the Council administration on the delays to Road Safety projects. At the last Council meeting, the Councillor for Forth ward asked “I know firsthand of projects that were supposed to be implemented this year and haven't even started. So my question to the Council leader is: can the Council leader confirm this is a priority for this administration?”

Edinburgh Liberal Democrat Finance Spokesperson Cllr Lewis Younie said “Safety for our young people around schools is a fundamental duty of the Council. We’re putting our money where our mouth is by calling for a record uplift to get progress on road safety around schools and are calling on parties across the City Chambers to back our proposal.”
