Retention of School Crossing Patrol Positions
Liberal Democrat councillors are pleased to have successfully secured the retention of school crossing patrol positions at 17 sites across the city, including key locations such as Ravelston Dykes and Roseburn.
Although many of these sites have remained unmanned—some for as long as 20 years—due to ongoing recruitment challenges, council officers had recommended that the posts be permanently removed. However, Liberal Democrat councillors strongly opposed this approach and instead urged officers to explore proactive solutions to make the roles more attractive to potential applicants.
Suggestions included reviewing and improving the pay, terms, and conditions associated with the positions to better reflect the importance of the role in ensuring children's safety. By taking this constructive and forward-looking approach, Liberal Democrats have helped protect vital community infrastructure that supports safe routes to school for families across Edinburgh.
